“For the survey, education of the public, identification, and categorization of grave sites”

NEWS for MARCH 2022

SURVEY of the graves has continued using the 2016 Tom Gresham Southeastern Archeological survey map as our standard.

We have explored the east side graves with metal detection devices to discover the metal posts which held the license plates. The evidence of new graves or the resolution of a possible graves is added to the Gresham survey. In the future, we will revisit these posts to look for the possible buried license plates.

Once the post is found a white flag is place next to the post and a rock is placed to signify it is a grave to be added to the Gresham survey. As of April 2nd 2022, we have certified 144 graves by discovery of the metal posts.

Public Access

Representatives from BikeWalk Baldwin have visited the cemetery and expressed interest in support of a bike trail and preservation of the Old Stagecoach Road. We are exploring a path that could connect the cemetery to nearby Walter Williams Park.

IDENTIFICATION OF GRAVE SITES

In addition to finding the metal marker posts, work continues on search for the license plates. If we find the plate numbers it will help in identifying the name of the grave but they are too rare to be reattached. We are considering reproducing a metal plate which will display an index number that corresponds to the information on our death registry.
